Why Are the Teen Years the Best Time for Braces?

You’ve probably noticed that a lot of your teen’s friends are getting braces. There’s a good reason for that! The teen years are often the ideal time for orthodontic treatment.

  • Most Permanent Teeth Are In: By age 11-13, most permanent teeth have erupted, giving us a clear picture of the bite and alignment.
  • Faster Results: Teenagers have higher metabolisms and are still growing, which can help their teeth and jaw respond more quickly and predictably to treatment.
  • Social Acceptance: With so many of their peers also in treatment, getting braces often feels like a normal rite of passage rather than something that makes them stand out.

Treatment Options for Your Teen

Today’s braces are more comfortable, efficient, and stylish than ever. At your free consultation, Dr. Thomas will discuss the best options for your teen's specific needs.

1. Traditional Metal Braces

The most common, reliable, and cost-effective option. Today's metal braces are smaller and more streamlined.

  • The "Fun" Part: This is the best option for customizing with colors! Teens can change their elastic band colors at every appointment to show off school spirit, match a holiday, or express their personal style.
  • Best For: All types of orthodontic cases, from simple to complex.

2. Clear (Ceramic) Braces

Clear braces work just like metal braces, but the brackets are made of a tooth-colored ceramic material.

  • Less Noticeable: They blend in with the natural color of the teeth, offering a more discreet look.
  • Best For: Teens who want a less visible option but still need the full power of traditional braces.

3. Invisalign® Teen

The "braces" that aren't braces at all. Invisalign Teen uses a series of clear, removable plastic aligners to gently straighten teeth.

  • Virtually Invisible: Most people won't even know your teen is in treatment.
  • No Food Restrictions: Because the aligners are removable, your teen can eat all their favorite hard and sticky foods (popcorn, gummies, etc.) without worry.
  • Easy to Clean: They can brush and floss normally.
  • Best For: Responsible teens with mild to moderate alignment issues. The aligners must be worn 20-22 hours a day to work.

For Teens Only: Your Top Questions, Answered Honestly

Does getting braces hurt?

This is the #1 question we get! The honest answer: No, it doesn't hurt to get them put on. There are no needles or shots. After they're on, and for a few days after each adjustment, your teeth and gums might feel sore or tender. This is totally normal and just means they're working! Over-the-counter pain relievers (like Advil or Tylenol) and eating soft foods for a day or two will help.

How will I look?

Braces are super common—you’ll probably see them on your friends, classmates, and even on TV. If you choose metal braces, you get to pick your colors, which is a fun way to express yourself. If you’re worried about the look, clear braces or Invisalign are both awesome, less-noticeable options. Your smile will be changing for the better, and that's a cool thing.

Can I still play sports?

Yes! You can play any sport with braces. We highly recommend wearing an orthodontic mouthguard (we can help you with this) to protect your braces and your mouth during contact sports like football, basketball, soccer, or wrestling.

Can I still play my instrument?

Yes! If you play a wind instrument like the trumpet or clarinet, it might feel a little weird at first. Your lips just need a few weeks to get used to the new "hardware." Most musicians adapt very quickly.

What happens if a bracket breaks?

First, don't panic. It happens. This is not a major emergency, but you should call our office. We’ll get you in to fix it. In the meantime, you can use orthodontic wax (we’ll give you plenty) to cover any part that is poking you.
