Pro Tips: Choosing the Right Color

Colors do more than just look cool. They can change how your smile appears.

Make Teeth Whiter

Want a brighter smile instantly? Choose Dark Colors. Navy Blue, Royal Purple, Black, and Deep Green provide contrast that makes your tooth enamel pop.

Colors to Avoid

White often makes teeth look yellow by comparison. Yellow can look like plaque. Dark Green can sometimes look like spinach stuck in your teeth!

The "Stealth" Look

Don't want them noticed? Choose Silver or Smoke gray. These blend in with the metal brackets better than "Clear" ties, which can stain over time.

Braces Color FAQs

How often can I change colors?
Every time you come in for an adjustment (tightening), which is usually every 6-8 weeks, you get to pick a brand new color combination! It's one of the best parts of having braces.
Does it cost extra?
Never! At Thomas Orthodontics, colors are always free. Whether you want one color or a rainbow, it is included in your treatment.
Do light colors stain?
They can. Clear, white, and very light pink bands are prone to staining from curry, mustard, tomato sauce, and coffee. If you eat these foods often, consider darker colors or "Smoke" gray.
Can I mix more than 2 colors?
Yes! Most patients pick 2 colors, but you can pick 3 or even do a rainbow pattern (every tooth different). It just takes our assistants a little longer to put them on, but we love the creativity!
Can I match my school colors?
Absolutely! We carry over 40 shades, so we can match almost any local high school or middle school in Land O' Lakes and New Port Richey.
What is a Power Chain?
A power chain is a connected row of elastic bands used to close gaps between teeth. If you need a power chain, you can still choose your color, but usually, it has to be a single continuous color per row.
Do the colors hurt?
No, the colors are just soft rubber bands. However, getting them changed means we are adjusting your wires, so your teeth might feel a little sore for a day or two after your visit—regardless of which color you pick!
Do colors have meanings?
Some patients think so! Red often symbolizes passion or holidays, Blue is calm/chill, Green is luck or nature, and Gold/Silver is luxury. But mostly, they just mean you have great style.
