What is the Difference Between a Dentist and Orthodontist?

By Dr. Brian Thomas • July 26, 2019

Think of it like medicine: A cardiologist is a doctor, but not all doctors are cardiologists. An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has completed an additional 2-3 years of full-time residency training specifically in tooth movement and facial growth.

While some general dentists offer braces or Invisalign, an orthodontist focuses on this 100% of the time. We are experts in the physics of tooth movement and the biology of jaw growth.
